about

The title was taken from the line in his lyrics "They call it winter sickness and I bet you know why". The first time I read it was like someone had taken the words right out of my mouth. I get terrible seasonal depression and every year when it starts snowing my mood crashes and I go into a hole for 6 months until the winter in Syracuse lets up.
Sometimes I wasn't sure if he was writing to me or not, I was too afraid to ask him. He definitely was speaking for all of us though, whether he meant to or not. We all felt that way, and we all felt a sort of abandon by life itself. We weren't the kind of people to have a future or a happy ending, and he really described it best. Most of us didn't expect to make it out of our twenties the way things were going. We weren't even into drugs or anything. A lot of us were straight edge, while some of us just smoked weed and cigarettes, but we were looking at a future on the horizon that did not look like it had anything in it for us, and we had no idea what we were going to do except play music until the wheels fall off, which they eventually did.
Shaun did have a considerable amount of depression from his illness, and we often had gallows humor together, joking that we should have a suicide pact and both kill ourselves together. We often joked that the motto of the band was "Instill suicide in 4 to 5 listeners". We knew our music was dreary and depressing. If we didn't laugh about it we would have just been crying all the time.
I don't think any of us realized the emotional toll all of this would have on us into our inevitable lives in the future. Some of us never really came back from his death, and the way that everything sort of just fell over on it's side and died. No light, no tunnel, just emptiness and void, with some of us left to deal with the fallout and all the horrible emotional waves that would come crashing down on us.
Whatever it was, it sure what beautiful.

Word as a Virus Syracuse, New York

Word As A Virus was a band that existed in the frozen wasteland of Central New York from 2001-2004 when our singer and leader, Shaun Luu passed away after a long battle with brain cancer. This was the soundtrack to those years of wishful thinking and eventual grim reality. Those that were there, know. Those that weren't. listen. ... more
