about

Shaun and I had talked extensively about our love of ambient drones and instrumental artists that threw away percussion and had extensively long notes hanging in the air that tugged at your heart strings. We had a mutual favorite song on NIN the Downward Spiral album, which was the interlude instrumental track "A Warm Place", and we had always talked about writing a piece like that for "the album".
I banged my head against the wall for months trying to write something like that, but I hated everything I came up with. It all sounded too sappy and boring, but what I didn't know at the time was that I was falling into depths unknown of depression that were beyond the normal lows and sadness. Bipolar was rearing it's ugly head and I was losing my ability to write anything that didn't sound grey and lifeless, the guitar became a chore instead of a vehicle of expression. I was probably just being too hard on myself but I could never quite come up with anything that I felt worthy of an instrumental track like Shaun and I had talked about.

One night at the bandroom, someone had gotten a new piece of gear, some weird cabinet, and I had just gotten this crazy double pedal boss giga-delay pedal which had this reverse feature. We hooked it all up and suddenly I'm just riffing into this delay pedal when Shaun looked right at me and said "That's it, dude! That should be that instrumental track we were talking about!" He was right, and I wasn't even trying. I was just trying to test a cabinet and a delay pedal. We layered several tracks of the same riff, reversed them, slowed them down, fucked with them, and added electronic percussion underneath it that sounded to us like Bjork.
All that agony and finally we had our instrumental track and we were actually happy with it. We spent an entire night at the computer just stretching and reversing and fucking with this little guitar line to make this little droney ambient piece, but it seemed so important to us. It's still special to me today.

about

Word as a Virus Syracuse, New York

Word As A Virus was a band that existed in the frozen wasteland of Central New York from 2001-2004 when our singer and leader, Shaun Luu passed away after a long battle with brain cancer. This was the soundtrack to those years of wishful thinking and eventual grim reality. Those that were there, know. Those that weren't. listen. ... more
