about

The lyrics to this song are engraved on the headstone of Shaun Thien Luu, who passed from brain cancer. This was the soundtrack to his coming to peace with his terminal diagnosis.
I was listening to a lot of Danny Elfman soundtracks at the time, and was very inspired by his use of melody and harmony. The ending rifff was always referred to in the band as "Jay, play the greatest riff ever..." It's what they called it, not me. To me, it was my Danny Elfman riff that I wrote in my basement being sad, manifesting a depressoin disorder and listening to a lot of the Edward Scissorhands soundtrack.
This is when we were still tuned in Drop C. When Tj joined the band, he had a 6 string bass and couldn't tune it up to C, so we decided to tune to drop A, and things got even darker and gloomier from there.
